Games Industry Won’t Have Room For ‘More Than Two’ Major Consoles For Next-Gen, One Of Them ‘Clearly’ Being Nintendo Says DFC Intelligence

DFC Intelligence has claimed that the next-generation of hardware is likely to feature only two successful video game consoles, with one of them ‘clearly’ being a Nintendo platform.

Speaking in its annual market repot and forecast, the market research company expects record growth for the games industry in 2025 due to Nintendo’s next console and the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. This follows a period of major decline during the coronavirus pandemic.

Furthermore, the DFC Intelligence report states that the number of consumers who play video games will eclipse the fox billion mark by 2027, which equates to nearly half of the global population. Nintendo will be “the clear winner” in the next line of hardware, which it attributes to earlier availability and reduced competition.

However, it added that there’s only room for one other successful console beyond Nintendo Switch 2, and feels that the PS6 “should have an advantage” due to Sony’s fan base and strong catalog of IP.

There isn’t room for more than two major console systems. Sony or Microsoft will struggle mightily in a distant third place – largely depending on which of those companies can gain early momentum. A new Sony system (PlayStation 6?) should have an advantage because of loyal base and strong Sony IP.

Microsoft failed with Xbox Series X/S but has made major acquisitions to become world’s largest software publisher. Microsoft has the option of focusing on software and distribution models over hardware.

Sony hasn’t announced the PS6 yet as the PS5 has only been out for four years, but it has given plenty of hints as to what its architecture may turn out like, particularly in wake of the announcement of Project Amethyst with AMD.
