Sony Santa Monica Studio has revealed that God of War Ragnarok will see more involvement from Atreus during combat, with Kratos’ son able to help his father out with more follow-ups and setups, game director Eric Williams has said.
Here’s what Williams had to say during a chinwag with IGN:
For me being first time [in the director’s chair], I’m going to take the history lessons of the past, and I’m going to use those to try to do that. So in Ragnarok, what we are trying to do specifically with Kratos, we’re trying to give a lot more expressiveness to the player.
The way [he and Kratos] link up, he’s grown up a little bit, so he’s got a lot more follow-ups and setups for Kratos.
Elsewhere, it also sounds like enemies will have more opportunities to cause you a few headaches, and you’ll have to adapt to what they throw at you.

Creatures then obviously need to have tools to go against that, otherwise you’re going to destroy them. So creatures have new things that you’re going to need to think, ‘Oh, I might need to break them down with Atreus first, or do this with Kratos.
God of War Ragnarok is scheduled for release in 2022 for PS4 and PS5, and like its predecessor, the game will be presented in one continuous shot.
