God Of War Ragnarok Was Almost Split Into Two Games For A Norse Saga Trilogy

God Of War Ragnarok will be the final game in the Norse saga that began with 2018’s God Of War, but it could’ve just as easily been split into two games, it seems, as the question of doing two games or a trilogy went back and forth within Sony Santa Monica.

Our first behind-the-scenes look at development focused on how the team built the story for Ragnarok, and it also discussed just how the team debated at length on whether or not to do a trilogy.

“Whether the Norse saga was going to be a trilogy or just two games was something we debated a lot,” lead writer Rich Gaubery says in the video.

“There were obviously pros and cons for either approach. So we waited for Cory Barlog to weigh in, and he did. And he said, ‘let’s do it in two.”

Senior producer for the narrative Ariel Angelotti went on to talk about how this has made Ragnarok “bigger than what we initially envisioned. There’s a lot of important story moments that we needed to cover.”

We’ll soon be able to see for ourselves just how epic God Of War Ragnarok ends up being.

With this saga now being finished with Ragnarok’s release, the big question quickly turns to what’s next for Sony Santa Monica, and for the first time in the studio’s life, could it be something not called God Of War?
