Grand Theft Auto series has shipped 125 million

The Grand Theft Auto series has shipped a whopping 125 million units globally since its inception in 1997, Take-Two has announced.

News comes via Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, who dropped the figure at this week’s Credit Suisse 2012 Technology Conference.

Zelnick also spoke on how the publishing giant refuses to annualize the series, which you can read up on in our earlier news story here.

The franchise started out life on the PC and PlayStation as a top-down adventure title, before making the transition to 3D with 2001’s Grand Theft Auto III for PlayStation 2. As well as PC and PlayStation, the series has also been released for Xbox, handheld, and mobile platforms.

The next entry in the series, Grand Theft Auto V, is due out in spring 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
