Grand Theft Auto VI is inching ever closer to its highly anticipated release next month, and the game has now picked up age ratings in numerous regions, including North America and the UK where it unsurprisingly bagged Mature and PEGI 18 certificates, respectively. However, the Australian and New Zealand ratings mention something others don’t — ‘sex scenes.’
While the other ratings mention the things yo would typically expect from a Grand Theft Auto game, including “blood and gore, intense violence, mature humour, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, use of drugs and alcohol,” both Australia and New Zealand mentions “Sex Scenes” as part of the ‘Restricted 18+ rating. By comparison, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy lists “Sexual Activity Related To Incentives and Rewards” in Australia, not New Zealand.
Sexual content is no stranger to the Grand Theft Auto series, with the most controversial inclusion being the Hot Coffee minigame in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. For those unaware, this mini game was not actually playable in the official released version of GTA San Andreas, but modders were able to find and enable a hidden code, allowing CJ Johnson, the game’s protagonist, to engage in sexual intercourse with his girlfriend. Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive were met with considerable legal backlash after its discovery, and the ESRB subsequently increased the game’s rating to Adults Only following an investigation.
While nothing is clear yet on how explicit Grand Theft Auto VI’s sexual content will be, the mention of ‘sex scenes’ isn’t too surprising considering the main characters are a couple.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
