Grand Theft Auto VI will run at 30 FPS at launch, with developer Rockstar Games reportedly unsure if there will be a Performance Mode offering 60 FPS on Sony and Microsoft’s latest hardware.
That’s according to YouTuber Davy Jones, who was able to visit Rockstar North where they were informed by Rob Nelson that GTA VI will run at 30 FPS from launch day. Meanwhile, Flow Games added that the frame rate performance could change down the line, but Nelson stated he was unable to commit to any other details at present. Here’s a translation of what Flow Games had to say:
According to Rob Nelson, Lead Developer and Co-director at Rockstar North, during this development period, the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second. According to the director, it is still necessary to consult the technical team to determine if there will be a 60 FPS option at launch (or in the future). He also emphasizes that he does not currently have details on resolution and other technical qualities, such as the use of Ray Tracing, but the performance, for now, is 30 FPS.
The news that GTA VI will run at 30 FPS may not come as a surprise to those who have been following our coverage over the years. Back in January last year, ex-Rockstar animator Mike York stated during an interview with Kiwi Talktz that he feels the game is probably not going to hit 60 FPS on consoles (at least not right a way), a prediction that we now know was spot on.
As previously reported, Nelson confirmed to the Kinda Funny Gamecast that GTA VI will not feature microtransactions and has not seen any generative AI used in development. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
