GT5 ships 5.5 million worldwide

Polyphony Digital’s rapturously received Gran Turismo 5 has bolted past the 5.5 million worldwide shipments grid line this week, Sony confirmed today.

Apparently, the lion’s share of the game’s shipments came from Europe (3.5 million), while 1.2 million and 550,000 shipments were attributed to North America and Japan, respectively.

The milestone brings worldwide life-to-date shipments of the venerable racing franchise to over 60 million units.

GT5 released on November 25 after a barrage of delays and having series creator Kazunori Yamauchi spend over half a decade chiselling away under its hood. Despite a few niggles, it wasn’t half bad, either.
