Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two and Alan Wake 2 developer Remedy Entertainment have locked horns in a trademark dispute over the use of the latter’s use of ‘R’ in its logo, which Take-Two claims is too similar to Rockstar Games’ iconic logo.
The stylised ‘R’ has been the poster boy for anything Rockstar-related for years now, something which Take-Two is taking issue with, with the dispute originally being filed last year — the same year that Remedy unveiled its new logo. The official reason for the dispute is described as: “There exists a likelihood of confusion on the part of the public.”
At the time, the Alan Wake creator had the following to say about the design of its new logo:
The bullet in the letter R in the old logo represented the era of Max Payne, but the Remedy of now is much bigger than a single game; we have a whole portfolio of games, new and old. It was time to update and redefine our visual identity to bring more consistency, showcase our evolution over the years, and better express our vision of today’s Remedy.

According to new details on the dispute, the filings are now in a “cooling off period.” The UK’s Intellectual Property Office states that this means Remedy and Rockstar have agreed to reach a settlement themselves over the issue.
You may recall that Take-Two has been involved in legal disputes numerous times in the past, most recently in December 2021, when it filed a trademark claim against Hazelight Studios’ co-op game, It Takes Two.
