Sony Pictures has revealed in a press release this week that the upcoming movie adaptation of Helldivers is set to hit cinemas on June 9, 2028, having been pushed back from its original November 10, 2027. What’s more, Alan Ritchson is now confirmed to star in the movie.
Fast & Furious franchise staple Justin Lin will be stepping into the director’s chair for the Helldivers movie, with production handled by Hutch Parker, Asad Qizilbash, and Perfect Storm Entertainment. The official blurb on the story confirms the focus is on an “elite unit of soldiers — known as Helldivers — who must battle alien creatures threatening to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth.” Ritchson is confirmed to play “one of the Helldivers,” but doesn’t mention if he’s taking on the starring role.
Previously it was confirmed that Aqua Man star Jason Momoa was cast in the Helldivers movie, although back in June it was revealed that he had decided to exit the project for reasons that are currently unknown. The film was originally announced in December 2025.
Helldivers 2 was released for the PC and PS5 in February 2024, and takes place during the 22nd century, 100 years after the Federation of Super Earth achieved victory over the Bugs, Cyborgs, and Illuminate during the events of the First Galactic War. The game sees players taking part in operations featuring one — three procedurally generated levels, taking objectives while battling off hordes of foes.
