Hideaki Itsuno Admits Making ‘The Kind Of Games I’d Like To Make Most Probably Wouldn’t Sell’

Speaking during an interview with Famitsu, Hideaki Itsuno, the former Capcom veteran who directed a number of titles including Devil May Cry 2 and Dragon’s Dogma, has admitted that he’s not necessarily making the games he would really like to, as he believes they wouldn’t sell.

Itsuno-san is now working on the debut project at his new company, Lightspeed Studio Japan, revealed that the games he’d like to make the most would be a bit ‘too out there’ to be commercially viable, but was able to compromise by taking elements from his ideas and combine them with something that he knows would work well.

Strictly speaking, no. I think the kind of games I’d most like to make probably wouldn’t sell. They’d be too out there to be judged as commercially viable. I am well aware of this myself, so instead, I extract specific elements from those game ideas and combine them with elements I know from experience will work. That’s how I’m building our new title.

Whenever I’m asked to propose new projects, I usually submit five or six ideas and mix in about two that I really want to do, but they never get chosen.

Speaking in a separate interview with VGC recently, Itsuno revealed that he’d like to have another go at the Capcom vs SNK franchise if given the chance, despite having now departed Capcom after 30 years.
