Hideo Kojima has revealed during a video at DICE 2026 during a ‘Remembering A Titan’ keynote that he had discussions with Vince Zampella about Respawn developing a Metal Gear shooter.
The Metal Gear creator stated that the talks happened following the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in June 2008, and the shooter was positioned as one of the options for Respawn as the studio was being founded. As you may recall, Zampella and Jason West were fired from Infinity Ward in 2010, after which they founded Respawn.
“Without him, the gaming industry wouldn’t be what it is today,” Kojima-san stated.
Kojima was one of a number of major industry faces who paid tribute to Zampella, who was tragically killed in a car crash in December last year. Among those who celebrated Zampella’s life and work included Phil Spencer, Geoff Keighley, Laura Miele, Todd Howard, Randy Pitchford, and Ted Price.
Last year Kojima released Death Stranding 2: On the Beach as his most recent major project, and is currently working on a number of projects including Physint and OD.
