Hitman: Agent 47 flops at the box office

20th Century Fox’s Hitman: Agent 47 has become the latest film based on a popular video game series to bomb at the box office.

Reports on the U.S. performance of the movie, which has been blasted by critics since its release last week, do not paint a pretty picture to say the least. The film, which stars Rupert Friend as the bald assassin, earned just $8.3 million during its opening weekend in North America.

Its worldwide gross currently stands at just over $16 million; not exactly a great start for movie that costs $35 million to develop. By comparison, the original Hitman film managed to pull in $13.1 million during its opening weekend.

While Agent 47’s silver-screen antics aren’t exactly setting the world alight, the next chapter in the video game series, 2015’s Hitman, is drawing far greater attention in anticipation for its launch this winter on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One.
