Guerrilla Games’ ambitious open-world action-RPG is almost upon us, and is perhaps one of the most important PlayStation 4 releases to date. After all, this marks the Amsterdam-based studio’s first attempt at creating fresh IP since it rolled out Killzone on the PS2 back in the mid-2000s, which has since become a tentpole franchise for Sony and a mainstay in the publisher’s top-selling exclusives. Horizon Zero Dawn, however, is an emphatic departure from the first-person, sci-fi fueled antics of its Helghast-slaying stablemate—and thank god it is too.

Set against a post-apocalyptic backdrop, Horizon focuses on a world populated by mechanised, dinosaur-like foes, with the remnants of humanity surviving out in the wilderness in crude camps. Players control Aloy, a young hunter who finds herself battling against these robotic behemoths in an effort to salvage their vital components to help fuel mankind’s struggling survival. Unlike Killzone, Guerrilla has chosen to eschew traditional gunplay for its latest IP, instead giving players a variety of new, albeit primitive-style weaponry to get to grips with to take on these mechanical horrors.
While easily one of the best-selling PS4 games to date, Horizon Zero Dawn also takes advantage of the PS4 Pro to further increase the fidelity of its stunning visuals, so those of you who are equipped with 4K TVs can really squeeze the most out of Guerrilla Games’ sprawling adventure on a technical level.
But how does the game actually play? Is it any good? And more importantly, can it live up to the hype? The critics have spoken, so find out in our Horizon Zero Dawn reviews roundup below.
