Inside PlayStation Network – Weekly Recap (March 21 – 25, 2011)

Welcome to our weekly recap pertaining to all things Inside PlayStation Network. Every MON-FRI, PSU shines the spotlight on a piece of content plucked from the digital delights of Sony’s online service, be it a chunk of DLC, PSOne Classic or regular PSN release. In case you missed out on any of this week’s entries, here’s your chance to catch up and see what titles we dissected under the microscope.

Monday – Blade Kitten

Ever wondered what it would be like to walk in the fury feet of a human/cat hybrid known as Kit Ballard? Yes? Well, Blade Kitten should be right up your street, then. Based on the eponymous web comic series, the game centres on Ballard, a bounty hunter who inhabits the planet of Hollow Wish who is busy sniffing out the trail of a dodgy chap by the name of Terra-Li. Typical however, our spunky heroine quickly finds herself caught up in a far more sinister state of affairs, kicking off what is a bread n’ butter slash-em-up. (Click here for full article).

Tuesday – Resident Evil: Director’s Cut

Having been responsible for baking trouser brownies across the globe since its inception in 1996, Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise is a game that needs little introduction. Catapulting survival horror into mainstream success, Resident Evil combined then-unprecedented visual quality with sofa-soiling scares, perfecting a paradigm that would subsequently be copied by numerous developers including Konami with Silent Hill. And then there’s that B-grade dialogue, the stuff of proper legend. (Click here for full article).

Wednesday – Daxter

The release of Daxter back in 2006 offered fans of the celebrated Jak franchise the hardcore title they had been craving for in the wake of questionable kart spin-off romp, Combat Racing. Unsurprisingly, gamers gravitated to the portable platformer like bees to honey, with the title going on to shift 2.6 million copies globally. As you might have twigged from the title, Daxter gives our Otter/Weasel hybrid a well-deserved spot in the limelight, with the game taking place before the events of Jak II. With Jak currently banged up and out of the picture, the game gives his long-time buddy a chance to dish out the justice as he arms himself with an electric flyswatter to defend Haven City from swarms of pesky bugs. Thursday – Age of Booty

You may not know it, but pirate point ‘n click romp Age of Booty’s origins can be traced back to Pimps at Sea, the long-running and highly amusing April Fools gag instigated by the chaps at Bungie Studios. Taking the form of a bread and butter, sea-based strategy outing, Age of Booty puts you at the wheel of a pirate ship as you navigate the waters seeking to expand your riches. As you cruise the high seas, you’ll scoop up various items such as gold, wood and every pirate’s favourite delicacy, namely bottles of rum. These resources can be channelled into accomplishing various tasks, such as expanding towns and keeping things on your leaky vessel – forgive the pun – ship shape. (Click here for full article).

Friday – Swarm

Anyone remember Overlord? Yes? Well, on the surface, Swarm shares a lot of superficial similarities with Codemasters’ lauded command-em-up. However, whereas Overlord had you barking out orders at a legion of loyal minions to carry out your thirst for slaughter, Swarm’s death-dealing antics are a little closer to home. Here, players control heap of 50 blue, bug-eyed chaps known as swarmites, who after a crash landing find themselves lumbered on a sprawling, hostile planet. At the wish of their queen, the swarmites must embark on a gruelling quest to scoop up as many DNA strands throughout the land as possible, all the while raking in a meaty score to progress to the next stage.
