Is 2K’s ADVENT the new XCOM?

It seems that the recent ADVENT tease from 2K could well be the next iteration of the turn-based squad shooter XCOM and may be a reboot of the original X-COM Apocalypse.

In a 2K newsletter yesterday the link to this website was included, showing a utopian cityscape owned and run by a company named ADVENT. The website promises a great and peaceful future in ADVENT city centers, with testimonies from its citizens, but the website's text glitches and changes to suggest that all is not truly legitimate with the ADVENT company and that there may be sinister undertones to their work.

The reasons this could be the new XCOM? Well, the visual style in the screenshots of the city already feel similar to that of Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within, not to mention that the glitching text also bears strong resemblance to the font style of those games as well. Also of note is the message ‘'We are still watching,” which echoes the Council from XCOM's ‘'Remember, we will be watching'' sign off.

The futuristic cityscape and suggestion that ADVENT could be an acronym for a sinister force like Enemy Within's EXALT ties in with the themes of 1997's X-COM Apocalypse. 2012's Enemy Unknown was a reboot of British developer Julian Gollop's own 1993 title UFO: Enemy Unknown, so it is quite possible that current developers Firaxis could draw from the well of the past games once again.

Many had speculated that the dystopian themes and mentions of gene splicing could be alluding to a new BioShock or even a return to System Shock, but the signs do seem to be pointing towards more tactical alien warfare from Firaxis.
