Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has said that true ‘generation-defining games’ for the PS5 will not arrive on the market until around 2022.
PS5 Won’t Have Gen-Defining Games Until 2022
Speaking during an interview with TASS, Ryan suggested that it will be a few years until we see what PS5 is really capable of. This is similar to the PS4, which didn’t really hit its stride until 2015 or so in terms of games that really tapped into its added horsepower.
History will tell you that it’s in the second or third year that the developers really hit their stride. Developers typically need a little bit of time to familiarize themselves [with the hardware]. But it’s probably 2022 that you’re going to see some wonderful things in the same way that it was 2015 [or] 2016 for the previous generation. When the generation defining-games started to be published.
In the same interview, Ryan also hinted that Sony has a Game Pass-style feature in the pipeline to rival Microsoft Game Pass.
