Jonathan Blow Says Braid: Anniversary Edition Has Been “Profitable Overall,” Following His Own Claims That Sales “Have Been Terrible”

Jonathan Blow, the notable creator of seminal indie game Braid made headlines for saying that sales of Braid’s remake, Braid: Anniversary Edition had been “terrible,” even going so far as to call them “dog s***.”

Today, Blow clearly felt the need to clarify a few things regarding his string of comments that sales were bad. In a Twitter post, Blow clarified that while Braid: Anniversary Edition has sold less than they would have liked, it was still “profitable overall.”

Since there are weird, non-reality-based discussions going around, let’s clear some things up!” he began.

Braid, Anniversary Edition has been profitable overall. It made more money than it cost to make. So anyone showing up with weird criticisms or hyper negativity, it’s clear they have no idea what they are talking about. (Especially if they themselves have not shipped a comparable game).

At the same time, we wanted Braid Anniversary to sell more than it has, in part because original Braid sold really a lot of copies, so it’s only natural to expect; and in part because when you are paying 14-18 people modern “tech” company salaries, that’s just very expensive (our studio was running a burn rate of around $4M/year).

So when sales come in below expectations, any plans you made about how exactly you are going to pay that team, to complete the other projects, those plans have to change.”

So that’s everything cleared up then.
