The LinkedIn profile for a former Sumo Digital employee has revealed that the studio was working on Just Cause 5 before ultimately cancelling the project a few years ago.
The employee worked as a Vehicles Feature Team Lead on Just Cause 5, which is listed as ‘now cancelled’ and was involved with the project between July 2021 – July 2023. Traditionally, the Just Cause franchise has been developed by Avalanche Studios, suggested that IP owner Square Enix had decided to shift development of the next numbered entry to Sumo Digital.

Square Enix has announced during a 2022 financial results briefing that a new Just Cause was in development, and job listings posted by Sumo Digital in early 2021 mentioned it was working on an “established AAA open-world action franchise.” This definitely fits the bill for Just Cause, although sadly it appears the game will never see the light of day.
Speaking on Sumo Digital, the studio announced earlier this year that it will no longer be working on original IP, and is instead going to focus on developing titles with its various partners.
Just Cause 4 is the most recent instalment in the franchise and launched for PS4, PC, and Xbox One in December 2018.
