Kaitlyn Dever, the actress who portrays Abby in The Last of Us HBO, has revealed during an interview with Deadline that production is ramping up for Season 3 of the post-apocalyptic drama.
I’m getting mentally and physically prepped right now. I go up in a couple days, actually, to start prep over there. I’m so excited to kind of take on a much bigger role in the season. The fans are really going to like it, I think, the shifting perspective onto Abby, getting some more context onto her storyline and going back in time with this season. So, I’m very excited for the fans to see it.
The Last of Us Season 3 is going to bring the spotlight over Abby, whereas Season 2 was primarily focussed on Ellie (Bella Ramsey), with Abby featuring in key scenes. This echoes the events of The Last of Us: Part II, where players controlled Ellie for a lengthy portion of the game before the action switched to Abby’s perspective up to the point where both storylines connected.
HBO has not yet confirmed where The Last of Us Season 3 will air, although with filming yet to commence it’s probably not going to air until well into 2027. Previously, Dever’s co-star Isabela Merced confirmed that production for The Last of Us Season 3 will kick off this year, so things at least seem to be going to plan.
While it has’t been confirmed just how long The Last of Us HBO will run for, showrunner Craig Mazin stated in October last year that he will likely need four season to tell the complete story of The Last of Us: Part II. Furthermore, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann confirmed last year that he will be stepping away from the series to focus on his upcoming game projects.
