Craig Mazin, showrunner on HBO’s The Last of Us series, has revealed that the post-apocalyptic drama will likely need four seasons to complete the story of The Last of Us: Part II, something which he’s previously touched on before.
Speaking with Collider, Mazin also revealed that Season 3 will likely have more episodes than the second series, admitting that there’s “no way to complete this narrative” with three season.
I think there’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2, just because the manner of that narrative and the opportunities it affords us are a little different. The thing about Joel’s death is that it’s so impactful. It’s such a narrative nuclear bomb that it’s hard to wander away from it. We can’t really take a break and move off to the side and do a Bill and Frank story. I’m not sure that will necessarily be true for Season 3. I think we’ll have a little more room there. But certainly, there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.

The Last of Us Season 2 kicked off last month and begins the story of The Last of Us Part II, and takes a dark turn as Ellie must come to terms with the death of Joel at the hands of a mysterious group of survivors lead by Abby Anderson. Just before season to aired, it was confirmed that The Last of Us Season 3 had been given the green light, and Isabela Merced has since stated that production on that series should begin in 2026.
