Data from Ampere has revealed that 35% of launch sales for Marvel’s Wolverine were from the physical release of the Insomniac Games-developed PS5 title.
In Europe, the disc-based version of Marvel’s Wolverine accounted for 51% of launch sales, according to GSD data, while in the UK two-thirds of the game’s were from the digital edition of the superhero title. In France, more than two-thirds of Marvel’s Wolverine sales came from the box version of the game. Ampere also stated that the game was the second-best selling PS5 title in September behind only EA Sports FC 27, with 2.16 million units sold.
In related news, Silent Hill Townfall also recorded strong physical sales last month, with 45% of copies coming from the disc version of the survival horror title. Meanwhile, The Blood of Dawnwalker and Onimusha: Way of the Sword saw 36% and 30% sales respectively coming from boxed copies on PS5.
“People have a need to collect,” commented analyst Joost van Dreunen. “That’s where physical sales are still incredibly relevant for the consumer market. The industry is ready to move on, but not so fast. This is increasingly a big part of it.”
Sony announced back in July that it is ending production of PlayStation game discs in January 2028, causing widespread backlash among fans of physical media. Shawn Layden, the former chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios, also chimed in on the topic, stating recently that he doesn’t feel the move is particularly positive: ‘If you can’t sell a thing, it means you don’t own a thing,’ he stated.
