The CEO of Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios has dismissed rumours that the company’s decision to shift away from the fantasy series is nothing to do with a conflict with Dungeons & Dragons IP owner, Wizards of the Coast.
Baldur’s Gate is based on the D&D IP, and with Baldur’s Gate 3 proving to be a huge success following its launch last year, many expected a new game or at least an expansion. However, Larian Studios confirmed last week that it’s moving away from the franchise.
Speculation soon cropped up that Larian Studios and Wizards of the Coast had some sort of falling out, hence the former’s decision not to continue with Baldur’s Gate. However, Swen Vincke took to Twitter to confirm that this was not the case at all.

Reading the Reddit threads, I would like to clear up something. [Wizards of the Coast] is not to blame for us taking a different direction. On the contrary, they really did their best and have been a great licensor for us, letting us do our thing. This is because it’s what’s best for Larian.
Nothing is known about Larian Studios’ next project, but it is confirmed it won’t involve the D&D IP at all. However, the studio has revealed it is still going to release a few updates for Baldur’s Gate 3, but there just won’t be any new content.
