Larian Studios Is Leaving Baldur’s Gate And D&D Behind, Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC/Expansions And Baldur’s Gate 4 Not In The Works

Larian Studios, the team behind last years game of the year Baldur’s Gate 3 has announced there won’t be a Baldur’s Gate 4, and there won’t be any expansions or DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3.

This all comes from the fact that Larian is leaving Baldur’s Gate and the world of Dungeons & Dragons behind. The Baldur’s Gate IP will also remain with Wizard’s Of The Coast.

For its next project, Larian chief executive officer Swen Vincke revealed during a panel at Game Developer Conference (GDC) 2024 that it is moving on to something else entirely.

While it’s exciting that a team at Larian is able to continue doing what they really want to do, that there won’t even be DLC or any expansions for Baldur’s Gate 3 does strike as disappointing for fans.

Especially considering that Larian was at least considering and talking about DLC at one point. Senior project manager Tom Butler went as far as saying Larian “wants to do more” with Baldur’s Gate 3, when questioned about DLC.

Vincke has even previously left the door open for DLC. But it’s clear that things have changed since those previous conversations, and as Butler previously emphasized, they were in the midst of discussing their next steps.

Nothing was set in stone, which means DLC was on the table, and so was leaving Baldur’s Gate behind. Now we know which way Larian went.

Which turns our attention to Larian Studios next project. It’s going to be a while before we hear what that is. Vincke has already made that clear.

But it’s also exciting to hear Vincke talk about it now, as he told GameSpot this next game will be the one to “dwarf” everything that came before it.
