Eidos Montreal was working on a reboot of the Legacy of Kain franchise prior to the company being acquired by Embracer Group, but was ultimately cancelled a few years back.
Speculation regarding a possible revival of the much-loved franchise has been doing the rounds lately after a number of CVs from previous staffers at Eidos Montreal mentioned a ‘Dark Fantasy ARPG,’ which was set to involve the revival of an established vampire IP. Sure enough, Insider-Gaming reports that this was indeed a Legacy of Kain reboot, and that it was shelved after Embracer acquired the studio.

According to sources, the Legacy of Kain project was set to be a ‘soft reboot’ that had only been in development for around one year before it was scrapped. The IP was then sent back to Crystal Dynamics, but it’s unknown if the studio did anything with it when it was returned. The project was also said to be going and had some barebones gameplay in place.
Yesterday it was revealed that Eidos Montreal had suffered another round of layoffs, with numerous ex-employees taking to social media to reveal they had lost their jobs.
Last December Aspyr Media release the Legacy of Rain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered set for PS5, PS4, PC, Switch and Xbox One, which was hoped to be the first stage in reviving the IP. Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll just have to make do with the remasters as a proper revival is no longer happening.
