Mike Daly, Game Director for Marvel’s Wolverine, has revealed during an interview with TheGamer that the development team at Insomniac Games took inspiration from 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is considered one of the best video games to feature the character.
We were definitely aware of that game, and we took inspiration from it. The reference gathering part of the project had us really looking everywhere, and I think that game did a really fantastic job of asking and answering a lot of the same questions that we asked and answered. Like, how do you represent Wolverine as authentically as possible? I would say rather than we took ideas from the game, it’s more like we had the same challenges as those devs and sort of arrived at similar conclusions.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine was originally released for the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PSP in May 2009, although some versions of the game received the Uncaged Edition subtitle for its inclusion of uncensored violence. Based on the film of the same name staring Hugh Jackman, X-Men Origins: Wolverine plucks inspiration from God of War and Devil May Cry, and gives players various and bloody methods to slay their foes, with attacks focussing on light, heavy and grappling strikes. Wolverine also has a rage meter that builds up, allowing him to unleash more powerful attacks when full.
Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to launch for PS5 on September 15, 2026.
