May was the third best-selling month for video game sales in the US, according to information released today by NPD. The month was not as good compared to the same month from the two previous years, and as a whole, the industry was down by 5 percent from April with total sales at $823.5 million. For yoy figures, May was down by 10 percent. Hardware sales may have found a 20 percent slump from the previous month, but the same cannot be said for software, which is up by four percent thanks to Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption sold a 1.5 million copies across the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PS3 version of the Wild West sandbox came in second place with 567,100 units while UFC 2010: Undisputed on PS3 came in fifth place with 192,300 units.
Sony’s PlayStation 3 was home to the greatest percentage of growth in May. The console, software, and accessories were up by 32 percent for the month and 28 percent year-to-date. Micrsoft took the greatest share of revenue with $254 million spent on Xbox 360 hardware, accessories, and software. Nintendo’s DS was the best-selling hardware for May with 383,700 units sold, down from 440,800 the month prior.
