NetherRealm Studios has lifted the wraps off the all-new Invasion Mode for Mortal Kombat 1, which takes the form of a board game-flavoured RPG where players hoover up loot, explore different maps, and take part in various mini-games.
According to a preview on the PlayStation Blog, Invasion Mode sees players guiding a party of characters across multiple maps, levelling them up, equipping them with loot, and battling against hordes of enemies to unlock new areas.
During your time visiting different realms you’ll grab in-game currency, concept art, and other items, which sounds similar to the sort of content you’d unlock in the Krypt in previous games. The term Invasion isn’t just for show; enemies and factions will invade realms to overthrow them, offering new challenges and unlockables as they make themselves known.
There’s plenty of nods to previous Mortal Kombat games, too. While exploring Invasion Mode, players can bump into classic Arcade Towers and Test Your Might mini-games, offering a nice throwback to the series’ beginnings.
Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled for release on September 19, 2023 for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
