Mortal Kombat returns to the arena in 2011

Warner Bros. has lifted the lid on an all-new instalment in the Mortal Kombat franchise, due out on PS3 and 360 in 2011.

Known simply as ‘Mortal Kombat,’ the game is in the works over at NetherRealm Studios and promises to make a ‘triumphant return’ to the series’ mature roots and boasts a fresh graphics engine and all-new gameplay elements, such as a tag-team feature.

Martin Tremblay, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, commented: "We are bringing the Mortal Kombat franchise back to gamers with the talented NetherRealm Studios team creating the game fans long to play," adding, "Re-establishing the brand with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Mortal Kombat innovates on past games while staying true to the brand’s legendary characters and fighting style."

"We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat," added NetherRealms creative director, Ed Boon. "This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!"
