Naoki Hamaguchi Would Like To See A Potential Final Fantasy VI Remake Handled By ‘A New Creator’

Speaking during an interview with GamerBraves, Naoki Hamaguhi, the director on the Final Fantasy VII Remake project, has said that while he’s well aware of how many people want to see a remake of Final Fantasy VI, he’d prefer that a new creator take it on instead.

Hamaguchi-san noted that he’s been involved with remaking Final Fantasy VII for about a decade now, and therefore isn’t sure if he’s the one to the head up a remake of Final Fantasy VI.

I have received a lot of voices from fans to make a Final Fantasy 6 remake. I have been involved in the Final Fantasy 7 remake project for now about 10 years from start to finish – and [I’m] now finally seeing basically the end of the tunnel – so in that respect, because I have used up all this time into producing this remake of Final Fantasy 7, should I be the one to undertake remaking another series?

So rather than myself heading another remake project, I would rather see maybe a new creator come in and put myself in the support section to sort of cheer them on, rather than being the one to head a new remake project.

Back in January 2024, Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase touched base on a Final Fantasy VI Remake during a chat with YouTuber Julien Chieze, suggesting that it could take twice as long as remaking Final Fantasy VII. This isn’t the first time that Kitase-san has spoke about a remake of the fan-favourite title; in July 2023, he said during a roundtable interview that he was still pushing for a FFVI Remake.

While it’s anyone’s guess right now as to whether we’ll see a FFVI Remake, Hamaguchi and the team are currently focussing on the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake project. While a concrete release date hasn’t been announced yet, the game is targeting a 2027 launch, and Hamaguchi and Tetsuya Nomura recently confirmed the game’s final name has been narrowed down to two options.
