Speaking during an interview with The Washington Post, Neil Druckmann of developer Naughty Dog has revealed the studio isn’t done with The Last of Us yet, stating there’s “a couple of projects” in the pipeline.
Druckmann told the publication that both him and Naughty Dog were not creatively involved in the upcoming third season of The Last of Us at HBO, but made it clear that the Sony-owned developer is not done with the franchise as a whole. This isn’t the first time Druckmann has hinted about more to come from the series, stating back in March that there’s a “few stops that remain on the road ahead.”
I wasn’t involved in shaping this season’s creative direction, and Naughty Dog did not have a creative role in the direction of this season. So I can’t personally speak to how production is progressing. It’s important for us to note that as the creator of the games, Naughty Dog is still the steward of this IP and even though this might be the end of this adaptation, we’re not done with ‘The Last of Us.’ There’s a couple of projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.
Druckmann didn’t elaborate any further on this, but there’s been rumours about The Last of Us Part 3 for a few years now, so we can’t rule that out. The Naughty Dog executive has given mixed messages about a possible third game, however. In February 2024, Druckmann revealed in the Making The Last of Us Part II documentary that “it does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to the story.”
On the flip side, he told Variety in March 2025, “don’t bet on there being more of ‘The Last of Us.’ This could be it,” and in September that same year he told the same publication that Naughty Dog thought about making The Last of Us Part 3 but instead decided to push forward with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet instead.
