Neil Druckmann, Studio Head at The Last of Us creator Naughty Dog, has revealed during an interview with Talk that he treats every game he works as if it were his last, and therefore puts his all into a project as not to leave anything on the table.
This philosophy is something that Druckmann also applied to The Last of Us, as he didn’t initially think there would be a sequel while making the first game.
Every game I make, every project I work on, I treat it like it could be my last. So I just pour everything into it, I leave nothing on the table. When we did the first Last of Us game, that’s how I treated it. I wasn’t sure I could ever get to make a sequel, so it had to have a definitive ending. Likewise, when I worked on Uncharted 4, same thing. When I worked on Last of Us 2, I was like I don’t know if I’ll ever get to do this again. It had this definitive ending.

He went on to say that his focus right now is The Last of Us HBO, and that ‘so many stars have to align’ if there were to be a The Last of Us Part III. As previously reported, Druckmann has touched on a possible new entry in the post-apocalyptic franchise, saying ‘don’t be on there being more of The Last of Us.’
That is the ending we’re working towards. For there to be another one, another thing, another project, so many stars have to align, I can’t guarantee it. So right now, my focus is on this season, and hopefully if HBO renews us, next season. And then I’m working on a new game called [Intergalactic]
While on the subject of Naughty Dog, a report emerged earlier today that the studio has an unannounced project in the works that has been in development for three years, with Uncharted: The Lost Legacy’s Shaun Escayg at the helm. As Druckmann mentioned in the above interview, the studio is currently working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet for the PS5, which he said is already playable at the Naughty Dog’s offices and described the game as ‘incredible.’
