New Battlefield game – EA drops first details

Electronic Arts has confirmed that a new Battlefield game is in development and will be released during the company’s FY 2019.

This puts the upcoming military shooter out anywhere between April 2018 and March 2019. However, given the series’ release history, we imagine the new Battlefield game will launch in fall 2018.

No details have been revealed on the upcoming shooter yet, and it’s unknown if we’re going to be looking at a full-fledged sequel to Battlefield 1.

EA previously confirmed that a new instalment in the franchise would be powered by the Frostbite engine.

“The core of our fiscal 2019 is a full slate of sports titles and their associated live services, plus new live services from Star Wars Battlefront II. We will add the next Battlefield game, and move into the action genre with Anthem. We expect our subscriber base to continue to grow, and for our new mobile titles to benefit from players looking for deeper experiences with higher production values,” said the publisher.

From what we can gather, EA is currently alternating between Star Wars and Battlefield each year, which began with 2015’s Battlefront and continued with last year’s Battlefield 1.

This year sees the launch of Star Wars Battlefront 2, which is due out on PS4, PC, and Xbox One in November.

Battlefield 1 saw the long-running first-person shooter franchise go back to basics, with the action set in the Great War. Developer DICE is continuing to support the game with post-launch DLC until early 2018.

The shooter was a critical and commercial success, with launch sales in the U.K. surpassing that of both Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline. The PS4 version currently has a Metacritic average of 89/100, making it the highest-rated entry in the series for some time.
