Capcom’s chief operating officer David Reeves has said that he expects Sony to launch a successor to the PlayStation 3 within the next two to three years – the same goes for Microsoft and its follow-up to the Xbox 360.
Speaking with GI.biz, Reeves described upcoming technology such as the PlayStation Move, Kinect and 3D gaming as another “blip” on the road to the next hardware cycle: "Anything they can add to revive and pique interest in the games until we have another clash of the titans in two years time," he said.
Speaking on his prediction as to when we’ll see Sony and Microsoft’s next console, he offered: "Two to three years, I reckon so. I don’t have any inside information. All the first-parties have got to be working on something.
"The tricky thing is when do you put a stake in the ground on technology? That’s the problem," Reeves added.
"You can be waiting a few extra months to implement something, but you’ve got to set a date to go with a certain chip at a certain point otherwise you’re going to miss the key milestones."
Sony has said multiple times that it aims to support the PS3 for 10 years, while Microsoft recently commented that it expects Kinect to extend the Xbox 360’s lifecycle by another five years.
