New Cyberpunk 2077 Character Creation Details Revealed

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED has revealed more details on the game’s character creation tools, promising players will have “many options” available to them from the start. The comments come following controversy over an in-game ad that depicted a transgender model selling a drink with the slogan ‘Mix it up.’

Cyberpunk 2077 places a large emphasis on character customisation. The player character, V, is designed so that you tailor him/her/them to your personal liking, and CD Projekt RED is aiming to handle the topic of transgender options as sensitively as possible.

Speaking with Gamasutra, Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, the game’s quest director, commented:

“It’s a very sensitive and important subject I believe. We have put a lot of thought into this. One of the things we want to do in the final game (which we couldn’t show in the demo yet, because as you mentioned it’s a work in progress) is to give the players as many options of customization in the beginning of the game as we can.”

One of the things the studio is keen to do is give players the option of adding facial traits on V that can be applied to any gender.

“The idea is to mix all of those up, to give them to the players, as they would like to build it,” explained Tomaszkiewicz “Same goes for the voice. We wanted to separate this out, so the players can choose it freely. This is something we are still working on, it’s not as easy as it sounds.”

“We do not want anyone to feel like we are neglecting this,” Tomaszkiewicz said of transgender portrayal, “or treating it wrongly.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on April 16, 2020. CD Projekt RED has hinted that the game will eventually come to the PS5, although nothing has been confirmed at this point.
