Bungie has outlined details on its update plans for Destiny between now and spring 2016, confirming the shared-world shooter will receive a major update that will be the largest since the launch of The Taken King back in September.
Speaking in its latest Weekly Update, Erik Osborne, the game’s Senior Community Manager, said that the first few updates in 2016 can be compared in size to October’s Festival of the Lost. Beyond that though, there’s something far bigger planned for the polarising alien shooter.
“The first of these early 2016 experiences will be on a scale close to Festival of the Lost. The second will be far larger than anything you’ve seen since the release of The Taken King. There’s also another significant update to the world and sandbox planned in this same window.
“This year, the plan is to deliver new experiences at a faster clip. To that end, the updates described above are all currently slated to hit across Winter and Spring of 2016, with more to come, as well.”
Osborne said that we shouldn’t expect too many announcements as Bungie is busy working on the new content, although it does intend on surprising fans here and there. He went on to say that he’s “really excited about what’s on tap for next year in Destiny, both the events and the bigger ticket content and activities.
“We’ve already talked about having a sandbox update each quarter, but there’s more on the way, too. Please give us some time to sort the details, and lock down the fun stuff to come.”
Osborne’s comments fall into line with Bungie’s previous comments that the studio won’t be releasing any major DLC for Destiny going forward. Instead, the former Halo developer intends on rolling out new events similar to what we’ve seen in the past month or so. That’s not to say The Taken King wasn’t a success, as it was; the DLC topped the U.K. All Format Chart upon release and also came out on top on the PlayStation Store’s best-selling games chart.
Still, we imagine Bungie is going to focus much of its DLC plans for the inevitable Destiny 2, whenever that may be. For now, there’s plenty to tuck into with the current version of Destiny, with Sparrow racing now available for those who fancy a break from the regular shooting-based action. Oh, and don’t forget to drop in on Xur, Agent of the Nine, who has returned to the Tower once again to sell you some Exotic goods.
