New Elder Scrolls game rumor surfaces as Bethesda increase workforce

Speculation regarding the release of a new Elder Scrolls game, possibly Elder Scrolls 6,  has kicked up a notch this week with news that Bethesda has increased its workforce to 180 staff members.

Bethesda Executive Producer and Game Director, Todd Howard, who is the brains behind some of the company’s biggest titles such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4, confirmed the figure during a chat with IGN ahead of DICE.

"In some respects we keep making the same game," Howard joked. "But it’s a style of game that we really, really like. "The world is the first thing we do, what is its tone. We usually talk about various locations, how that would feel, what we could do in it, how it could express itself. Why is it interesting to explore is where we start."

It’s worth noting that the studio had around 108 staff members at the time of Fallout 4’s release back in fall 2015, and still has 28 positions available at the time of writing. This has fueled hope that the studio is gearing up for full-scale development of the long-rumored sixth entry in the Elder Scrolls franchise, though nothing official has been said at this point.

While Bethesda recently confirmed that a sequel is not currently in development, it has said that an Elder Scrolls 6 will happen at some point. Typically, a new Elder Scrolls game is released every four or five years, although Bethesda bucked that trend following Skyrim’s release, as 2016 passed with no new game in the series. Instead, the company has been busy supporting Fallout 4 with a series of post-release content packs, and launched a remastered version of Skyrim for PS4 and Xbox One late last year.

Meanwhile, The Elder Scrolls Online continues to receive new content updates incorporating a number of previous titles, including Morrowind and Oblivion.
