New Modern Warfare 2 details unveiled

Are you ready for some details on Infinity Ward’s follow up to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare? The latest issue of Game Informer has a 10-page cover spread on this hotly anticipated sequel, which comes out for the PS3 in November.

The article reveals information about the game’s wintry settings and plot — thwarting threats from a Russian terrorist. The gameplay in Modern Warfare 2 is described as wide open, with a lot of variety in terms of the story.

But don’t get your hopes up for cooperative play in the main campaign. Infinity Ward president Jason West said in the article, “We did a lot of co-op stuff early on that we were interested in, and it didn’t work with the story mode at all.”

Instead, your co-op multiplayer options rest in the Special Forces mode. There are several Special Forces scenarios — similar to the "Mile High Club" bonus level at the end of Call of Duty 4 — designed with co-op in mind. West did not comment about if co-op will be available online.

While playing the game, you’ll never lose control of your character, giving you the opportunity to ride snowmobiles and climb icy walls yourself, rather than watching cutscenes. "We want to put the player in those interesting situations and have them feel what the person in that role would really feel," stated West.

West says Infinity Ward wanted to get some guidance in development of Modern Warfare 2 through fans of the first game, so the studio used networking sites like Twitter to get feedback from casual and hardcore fans alike. Based on some of that feedback, Modern Warfare 2 will be a longer game. Also, the issue of enemies constantly re-spawning until the player crosses an invisible line is being worked on.
