The latest PS5 Slim models have reportedly seen some changes implemented by Sony, with console technician and modder Modyfikator89 having discovered some rearranged components in the Marvel’s Wolverine console.
Speaking in a post on X, they noted that the new EDM-051 motherboard is “much more interesting than it looks,” and “isn’t just another cosmetic revision.” The motherboard features a new layout, with the CR2032 CMOS battery being easily removed and replaced. The modder added that the hardware has seen a “redesigned and simplified internal layout”, which features “newer, lower-cost and more optimized HDMI retimer implementation.”
Meanwhile, Sony has revised the cooling system for the console so that it now has a Liquid Metal interface similar to the PS5 Pro, with “a noticeable different heatsink construction/material compared with earlier Slim revisions.”
Compared with the 2025 Slim revision, which had already received the improved cooling system, Sony has changed things again. The area around the APU / die and its protective surface looks different, and the liquid-metal containment appears to be closer to the approach used in the PS5 Pro. The new protection seems to expose less area directly to the liquid metal and should help keep it better controlled around the processor. So even after the 2025 cooling update, Sony clearly kept refining the thermal design. This is not just the same Slim with a different shell.
The PS5 Slim was released a few years after the original version of the console, and smaller and lighter than its earlier counterpart. The digital-only version of the PS5 Slim can be fitted with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, sold separately.
