Spotted by Gematsu, new trademark filings for Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco made by SEGA could be an indication that the classic series is due to return sometime soon.
Both trademarks were filed in Japan at the end of last year on December 27, 2024, Gematsu notes, they’ve just gone public as of today.
The entire Ecco franchise spans five games in total, and is one of SEGA’s classic franchises that is still beloved by players today.
If a new Ecco game is on the horizon, it’ll be the first one in at least 25 years, assuming it’s out sometime in 2025. The franchise will be 33 years old by December of this year, and the ocean-exploring, dolphin-jumping gameplay has continued to influence games to this day.
Pepper Grinder, for example, is a game that has connective threads with Ecco the Dolphin. And, once again assuming that there is a new Ecco game coming, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not SEGA have decided to put out a remaster of the original titles, or just start with a totally new entry.
