NGP, Xperia Play could win handheld battle, says Divnich

Sony’s Next-Generation Portable (NGP) or Xperia Play could emerge victorious in the looming portable punch-up with 3DS and iPad 2, says EEDAR analyst, Jesse Divnich.

Speaking during a chinwag with NowGamer, Divnich said that either of Sony’s new devices stand a chance of taking the next-gen handheld crown, though added it all depends on whether they boast enough content to compete with Nintendo heavy weights like Mario and Pokemon.

“If any product could do it, it would be the Xperia or NGP,” said Divnich, speaking in light of the UK release of 3DS and iPad 2 yesterday. “Both are amazing pieces of technology that truly evolve the mobile and portable gaming markets.”

“Only one portable gaming system has the likes of Mario, Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Link, and many more,” he added. “At the end of the day, it all comes down to content, and in that domain, Nintendo is king.”

NGP is pencilled in for release in Japan at the end of the year, with a UK release yet to be determined. Xperia Play was originally scheduled to launch in the territory on April 1, but has been postponed due to “some bugs in the software.”
