Xbox big cheese Phil Spencer has significantly played down the suggestion that Microsoft’s Game Pass service could find itself launching on rival platforms such as PS4 and PS5.
While this might seem glaringly obvious, Big Phil has said in the past that a “long term goal” was to have the service on “on all platforms,” hence why he’s now finding himself having to shoot those hopes down in flames.
Xbox Game Pass Not Launching On Rival Platforms
At one point there was a lot of rumors suggesting that Microsoft and Nintendo were working out the kinks in regard to getting Xbox Game Pass working on the Switch. Still, even this now seems very unlikely, according to Spencer.
Here’s what he had to say during a chinwag with GameStar:
The thing about other gaming console platforms is we’re not able to bring a full Xbox experience on those platforms.
In places where we have brought Xbox – mobile phones like we’re doing now with Project xCloud with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate [and] what we’ve done with PC bringing our full Xbox experience there – we know when somebody is playing one of our Xbox games there is an expectation that they’ve got their Xbox Live community, they have their Achievements, Game Pass is an option, my first-party library is completely there…
The other competitive platforms really aren’t interested in having a full Xbox experience on their hardware. But for us, we want to be where gamers want to be and that’s the path that we’re on.
Hardly a shocker, right? Sony obviously has its own services ready and waiting for consumers, namely the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Now, and PlayStation Plus.
