Obsidian boss Fergus Urquhart has revealed during an interview with Bloomberg that the studio is not planning on making The Outer Worlds 3, as sales of the second entry in the series failed to meet expectations.
The interview claims that both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed had “disappointing results” in terms of commercial performance, with Urquhart commenting that both games’ performance had Obsidian “think a lot about how much we put into the games, how much we spend on the, how long the take.” He added that as both titles had a development cycle of more than six years, he wants to reduce this to three or four years going forward for new projects
Elsewhere, Josh Sawyer, Studio Design Director for Obsidian, addressed the fact that the developer launched three games in 2025, noting this wasn’t deliberate and resulted in Obsidian’s support teams being stretched thin.
Spacing those releases helps the company manage its resources and not burn everybody out. It’s not good to release three games in the same year. It’s the result of things going wrong.
The Outer Worlds 2 was released for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S in October 2025. The sci-fi RPG sees players following the daring Earth Directorate agent, who must unearth the source of an alarming number of rifts that are threatening to annihilate the human race. Your mission leads you to Arcadia, which is home to skip drive technology, where your decisions will determine the fate of not only the colony, but the whole galaxy.
