Pachter: ‘3DS will outsell PSP2’

Nintendo’s 3DS is poised to pummel PSP2 in the next-gen handheld battle as it “will have greater success in capturing the consumer’s imagination,” according to Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter.

The analyst reckons the upcoming portable punch up will play out in a similar manner to the on-going clash between PlayStation Move and Kinect, which Pachter notes is currently heading in Microsoft’s favour.

Furthermore, he perceives PSP2 as offering nothing new for punters, whereas Nintendo’s hardware brings something fresh to the plate in terms of its ability to render games in 3D without the need for glasses.

"I think that the 3DS will outsell the PSP2, because the 3DS is new and different, while the PSP2 is likely going to be a souped up version of the old PSP," said Pachter, during a chinwag with IncGamers. "Thus, I think that 3DS will have greater success in capturing the consumer’s imagination.”

"I think this is Kinect vs. Move all over again," he continued. "Kinect is outselling Move because Kinect is new and different, while Move is very similar to the Wii."

Sony’s yet to lift the lid on PSP2, though the latest industry rumblings point to an official reveal on January 27. Meanwhile, Nintendo is gearing up for a 3DS-centric shindig in Amsterdam later today, where it plans to roll out its European launch details for the new handheld.
