PixelJunk dev would ‘prefer not to do any more sequels for the time being’

Dylan Cuthbert, founder of Q-Games, has said the studio wants to focus more on original titles going forward, dashing hopes of seeing anymore PixelJunk sequels in the immediate future.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Cuthbert said that the firm is beavering away on a social network spin-off of Monsters, and after that will be turning their attention to pursuing original ideas.

"We get a lot of calls to do an Eden sequel and people also say they want more Monsters. We’re actually doing a social network version of Monsters. Probably Facebook. It’s a hell of a lot of fun," he commented.

"Apart from that I’d prefer not to do any more sequels for the time being. We have a couple of original ideas we want to pursue. You can get into this trap if you start doing that, where that’s all you end up doing."

The Q-Games boss added that the reason the studio churned out PixelJunk Shooter 2 was due to the fact they had a heap of left over ideas to play with.

"When we made Shooter we had all these ideas left over, and we thought it would be such a waste not to do another, so that’s why we did Shooter 2. That was necessary. Apart from that, I always prefer to make original things. Every now and then, as fan service, make a sequel. But not one after another."

Cuthbert  wasn’t able to offer any hints as to what type of genre to expect from the studio after PixelJunk SideScroller/PixelJunk 4am, but did say Q-Games want to tackle the 3D scene.

He wouldn’t offer any concrete details of what will follow the impending PixelJunk SideScroller and PixelJunk 4am, but did reveal that a 3D title is part of the plan.

"We haven’t decided genres yet, but when we do make a 3D game we’ll be doing something that looks completely different. We don’t want to go with a standard 3D game – we want to find something else to do in that space."
