PlayStation-edu to lead way for future developers

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has officially revealed the PlayStation-edu initiative that will allow colleges and universities nationwide the opportunity to obtain PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable dev kits for their classroom setting.

The company is hoping this will lead to engineer and computer science students gaining a better understanding on how some of the hardware works, and that by giving individuals access to such technology while at school will help contribute to a more efficient workforce in the future.

"We expect this program to be a great tool to teach students about the PlayStation platforms," commented Mark Danks, Senior Manager, Developer Support, on the PlayStation blog.

Schools will be required to legally purchase these dev kits and will also be required to sign legal agreements in order to get their hands on the SDK, documentation, demo code, samples and web site support. There is no specified date as to when this will be released, but we’re assuming it will launch with the Fall 2008 semester.

Stay tuned for further information as it breaks.
