Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry has reported information from unknown sources that Sony is powering the PlayStation Now game streaming service by putting the power of eight PlayStation 3’s onto single motherboards.
Digital Foundry explains how this development, quite clearly, saves space and energy, but also that it allows for Sony to make latency-improving changes to the hardware. It has apparently taken a lot to create the service, as the PlayStation 3 hardware doesn’t sound to be a natural bedfellow with streaming.
A leaked product roadmap gives the important dates for the service. PlayStation Now will have a closed public beta during this quarter and will launch in the U.S. in Q2, before launching in Japan and Korea in 2014, then finally landing in Europe in 2015.
