Sony has got a big year ahead of it with numerous first-and third-party juggernauts set to launch on PS5, so naturally, the rumor mill has already kicked into overdrive about an impending State Of Play event. Yes, we’re bound to get more than a few of them this year, but when exactly?
Well, for starters, it is widely believed that Microsoft will host some sort of showcase this month, seeing as how their first-party plans are pretty thin right now. Jez Cordon has indicated something is in the pipeline on Twitter. Sony will obviously want to counter this with an event of its own, right?
Meanwhile, it’s been suggested that Sony will be hosting a State of Play in February or March. This would make sense, as there’s a lot of major releases around that time, including PSVR 2 in late February. That alone is enough of a reason to pull the curtains up on a new State of Play.
In terms of games, we have Hogwarts Legacy (February 10), all the PSVR 2 launch games on February 22, with March offering up Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty (March 3), Star Wars Jedi Survivor (March 17) and Resident Evil 3 Remake (March 24). There’s enough to talk about there, for sure.
That’s not say Sony won’t focus on something further away. We know Spider-Man 2 is out in September 2023, so we can’t rule out a possible first (proper) look at the web-slinging sequel. Then there’s anything unannounced that Sony is keeping close to its chest for now.
Of course, we can’t rule out a possible State Of Play January 2023 event, as Forspoken is out later this month.
Regardless, Sony will want to start the New Year with enough momentum to keep it in competition with whatever Microsoft has up its sleeves, and with such a packed year ahead of it, State of Play is just the ticket to hit the ground running.
