PlayStation VR has a Wii-sized external processing unit

A new report has claimed that the external processing unit for PlayStation VR, Sony’s upcoming virtual reality gaming headset, is around the size of a Nintendo Wii console.

According to Polygon, the device, which will be available in the first half of 2016, requires gamers to plug it into the processing unit, which is in turn plugged into the PlayStation 4. Apparently, it’s small enough to be compared to a Wii, and while no pictures were allowed to be taken, Sony confirmed to the site this is the final retail configuration of PS VR.

Pleasingly, Polygon noted in its report that the headset is comfortable to wear, and can be adjusted according to the user’s needs via a dial on the back. We previously heard about the required external processing unit back in November, although further details were not revealed at the time.

Sony has neglected to confirm a price point for the PS VR at this stage, although it has suggested the cost will be positioned similar to that of a new games console. Analysts are already predicting the device will be a pretty big success, with 1.5 million sales forecast by the end of 2016. Furthermore, Hideo Kojima has also expressed interest in dabbling in virtual reality gaming, as has Resident Evil creator, Capcom.

The format holder announced a number of PS VR titles during its annual PlayStation Experience event earlier this month, including Ace Combat 7. Prior to that, it confirmed several new titles later at Paris Games Week, such as Tekken 7, Gran Turismo Sport, Dreams, and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. Recently, it was reported that PS VR received a slight performance upgrade as Sony continues to tweak the headset in the months prior to launch.
