PlayStation VR price to hit $400-600, says research firm

Sony’s upcoming PlayStation VR headset will cost around $400-600 when it finally hits stores in the first quarter of 2016, according to SuperDataResearch.

This would put the device in the same region as Oculus Rift, which yesterday was confirmed to retail for $599. Furthermore, Sony has previously commented that PlayStation VR would be positioned at a similar price to that of a new games console, which would fit in this price range.

Elsewhere, the market research company also found that Sony’s virtual reality gaming device will sell approximately 1.9 million units in 2016 with a market share of 5 percent, based on survey results among consumers.

Interestingly, this puts PlayStation VR with the lowest market share out of all the competing virtual reality technology. Google Cardboard is expected to gobble up 71 percent of the market, followed by Oculus Rift/HTC Vive and Samsung Gear VR at 17 percent and 7 percent, respectively.

Sony has a number of games lined up for release on PlayStation VR, including Tekken 7, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, Gran Turismo Sport, Dreams, London Heist, and many more. The official launch lineup has yet to be confirmed, though with the device due to launch in the first half of 2016, we should hopefully hear more info, including that all-important price point, soon enough.

A number of popular developers have already expressed interest in creating games for PlayStation VR, including the creators of the Resident Evil and Metal Gear franchises. Nothing official has been confirmed as of yet, however.

The device will be powered by an external processing unit, which has now been confirmed to clock in at the same size as a Nintendo Wii console. Sony is also continuing to tweak the performance of PlayStation VR as it nears release.
