PocketStation for PlayStation Vita, a new app designed especially for Sony’s new handheld, has been officially announced today by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ).
The electronics giant previously teased the return of its miniature device a few days ago, and has now confirmed that the PocketStation app will be available for free for PlayStation Plus subscribers.
Consumers will be able to download the app until December 2, and will be compatible with the same PlayStation titles that took advantage of the device back in the late 90s. As such, all those delightful mini-games and extra features that functioned with the original PocketStation will be fully accessible again.
The PocketStation, for those who are too young to remember, was released exclusively in Japan in January 1999, and takes the form of a memory card/digital assistant device. It shipped nearly five million units by July 2002, and spawned the first title to star Sony mascot Toro, Dokodemo Issho.
Featuring an LCD screen, real-time clock and flash memory, the PocketStation was compatible with a plethora of popular PSOne titles, including Final Fantasy VIII, Arc the Lad III, Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped and Ridge Racer Type 4.
No word on a possible western release of the PocketStation app has been issued by Sony, but we’ll keep you posted.
